At long last, the Green Room Sessions interview and live acoustic session with Chicago Americana/experimental trio Darling sees the light of day...or something like that. It was taped Tuesday, August 24, 2010, and today is a special day for the band, as their debut full-length, Lights That Last Forever also saw its official release today. You can pick up the album in CD or cream-colored vinyl/digipak from the Cardboard Sangria Records website, or at fine local music retailers. Special thanks to band members Jeff Schneider, Don Ogilvie, and Nick Voss for taping the interview. So here's what happened. The guys from Darling were awesome enough to tape an in-depth interview and live music session last month, but I came down with an evil superbug cough that drains me of my life force and haven't finished the edit yet! However. They're playing tomorrow night (Thursday, September 16th) at The Hideout to celebrate the release of their first full-length album, Lights That Last Forever (out on Cardboard Sangria Records September 28), and I wanted to give all y'all a taste of what's in store at the show and on the podcast. Seriously, it's a good album, they are a fun and talented bunch of guys, and you should listen to their music now. Which is where the online player below comes in. Wow, quite a lot has happened in a week. Celebrities are dropping like flies these days. Most importantly (to the music world, at least), shortly after posting last week's show, it was all over the news that Michael Jackson was dead. Love him or hate him, and whatever he may or may not have done, he was one heck of an entertainer, and will be missed in the music world. Let's all take a moment to remember the late King of Pop with an adorable cover of “Beat It”—

RIP, man.

So after an approximately two-year hiatus (for those of you who knew me back at WPGU-FM in Champaign), I have begun once again to do a segment on my show that I like to call the Cover of the Week. Promoter's Ordinance Update

Good news! There was an amazing outpouring against the Chicago Promoter's Ordinance (which was to be voted on tomorrow) by people who support our local music scene. As a result, the Ordinance (at least as-worded) has been tabled, and the vote will not take place tomorrow. More can be read about the whole situation here.

Good work! But we should still all keep an eye open to make sure a future incarnation of the ordinance won't be as crippling to local music as the last one was.

Local Music and the Promoter's Ordinance

So normally I don't deal with politics in my blog or on my show. But on this particular occasion, it's a matter of some concern.

This Wednesday (May 14), the Chicago City Council will have the chance to approve an ordinance that could deal a serious blow to Chicago's creative community (music, arts, theatre, culture at large). Bad news.

Some of the implications of this ordinance include:

- Any event promoter must have a license from the city of Chicago and liability insurance of $300,000.

- The definition of "event promoter" is loosely defined, meaning it could apply to a band, singer, or visiting theater company.

- An event promoter must be licensed and will pay $500 to $2,000, depending on expected audience size.

- Applicants for a license must be over 21, have fingerprints taken, submit a background check and more.

- Smaller venues are targeted, as venues with 500 or more permanent seats are exempt.

- Police must be notified at least seven days prior to an event.
